Message from the Board of Trustees

Date: 4/25/2018
Welcome to our 30s: Change, Success, Celebration and Opportunity

Change:

In January 2018, after much deliberation and consideration, and in recognition of Tony Plakas' over 20 years of service as celebrated in November 2017, the board of trustees and Tony decided to move in a new direction for the organization. We are grateful for Tony's contributions and vision. Under his leadership, Compass grew to be a nationally recognized LGBTQ community center. We will always be grateful for his dedication and hard work.

Effective January 2, 2018, with the unanimous support of the Board of Trustees and her staff, Julie Seaver accepted the position as Compass' Interim Executive Director. After over 10 years at Compass serving in many roles, Julie's leadership will allow Compass to continue its mission to diminish stereotypes by challenging long-standing misconceptions about the character of the LGBTQ community, be a leader in Palm Beach County and the nation and provide life-saving services to our community.

With Compass in the steady, experienced hands of Julie and her team, the board of trustees is focusing on its fiduciary responsibility to ensure the long-term vitality of the organization through the acquisition and retention of outstanding leadership. The Board has launched an Executive Director search process. Interested candidates for the Executive Director position are asked to provide their resume to the search committee at board@compassglcc.com through May 15th, 2018.

Success:

Before turning the big Three-Oh, Compass ended its 29th year hosting the 15th Annual Cocktails for Compass, held on December 11, 2017.  The event was a huge success. Our host committee sponsored a beautiful night at Club Colette garnering over $100,000 to support Compass' life-changing work in the LGBTQ community of Palm Beach County with a sold-out event!

Then, the Compass team and our innumerable volunteers hosted record crowds for both the parade and the festival in the beautiful South Florida sunshine for its biggest annual event, Palm Beach Pride, held the weekend of March 24th and 25th.   We signed up many new members, met new friends who'd never attended a Pride event before, and caught up with others who have been supporters of the experience for many years. The Rainbow Resistance was out in full force, raising over $70,000 to support our local community.

Celebration and Opportunity:

Since we are no longer in our "20s", Compass will be taking on adulthood as it should, by throwing a party! Please join us on June 30th for the 17th annual Stonewall Ball at the Harriet Himmel in downtown West Palm Beach, when we will officially launch Compass' 30th anniversary celebration. Come out and join us for the celebration - Buy tickets here.

Our new opportunities this year include a residency with our youth by performers from the It Gets Better Project in June. Our youth will also take part in an inter-generational storytelling project in partnership with Palm Beach Dramaworks, to be presented in October as part of LGBT History Month.   Mark your calendars and donate here.

SMART Ride 15 is happening this November, and Compass is proud to have been chosen once again as a benefiting agency. The staff and volunteer riders are already gearing up to make this year's ride the most successful yet. If you are considering being a rider or volunteer, please register here.

Compass is extremely grateful for our ongoing partnership with the City of Lake Worth. Our public-private partnership is one of a kind, just like our great hometown. We are enthusiastic about the continued revitalization of the downtown corridor. Compass affirms its commitment to be a part of our city's growth, diversity and change.

As Compass celebrates 30 years in our community, we look forward to working with you all to explore all the incredible opportunities which will arise from a revitalized vision of the organization and enthusiastic leadership. 30 is the new fabulous!

Sincerely,

The Compass Board of Trustees
